Mr. Sudhir Kumar

Director & Industrial Designer,

SKM Designs Private limited, Faridabad

Introduction of the Speaker

Alumnus of the National Institute of Design, Ahmadabad, 1993-96. Today, as Director of SKM Designs, Sudhir has steered his design services into research related fields of Healthcare where he has to his credit 60 plus professional Diagnostic and Therapeutic Medical Devices design and development assignments that have been taken up for manufacture by large, small and medium enterprises. His clients speak highly of the competitive benefits their organizations have gained through investments in design and vouch for Sudhir’s contribution in their success story.

Sudhir is also the recipient of the ‘The Hindi-Hitachi Scholarship’ in Product Design offered by the Japanese giant company Hitachi Limited, Tokyo. This offered him an opportunity to undergo a six months training in advanced studies in Product Design at DEKEN, Hitachi’s Home Appliances Center, Kokubunji, Japan. This exposure proved influential to help focus on design and development of medical equipment.

Sessions:

Session 1

16 February 2022

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Real Life Applications of Design Thinking in Healthcare: Medical Equipment Design: India is the 4th largest market for medical devices in Asia. The medical devices industry in India is poised for significant growth in the next five years, with the market size expected to reach $50 bn by 2025. Hence, the future of the medical device industry in India is quite promising.

The Medical devices industry in India consists of large multinationals as well as small and medium enterprises (SMEs) growing at unprecedented scale. Many of them have good functional products but SME lack medical devices with proper design and engineering. Product Design and Innovation bring substantial change in the industry and Product Designer and Design Consultancy firms are closely working with companies in Large and SMEs to bring the changes. Despite the difficulty and adverse conditions Product Design profession seems to be contributing a good support to these manufacturing units and make them at par with best in the available competition.

Session 2

16 February 2022

3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Emerging Autonomous Healthcare System: Technology in many domains is so advanced today that we have driverless trains, Fly-by-Wire autopilot aircrafts, self-driving autonomous cars, autonomous robots etc., therefore, it is realistic to think about autonomous healthcare for doctorless clinics, surgeries complex treatment etc. serving larger population.

Artificial Intelligence is a growing component in autonomous systems for the health care domain expected to lead to a global market value of 34 billion $ by 2025. Autonomous robots in healthcare can be segmented in assistive, rehabilitation, humanoid, delivery, implanted, surveillance and security.

Resources to design and build autonomous healthcare systems with new breed of affordable AI Engineers and designers can possibly contribute a lot to the healthcare segment and improve on the capabilities of surgeries and related patient handling in healthcare. Understanding the need and converting them into design led solution can bring a large change.

Session 3

16 February 2022

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Building cost effective functional prototypes for new design of Medical Devices : Launching & manufacturing a new medical product in the market entails multiple iteration and risks. Medical Device Prototyping is done to identify opportunities and challenges in the initial stages of medical device design development.

There are limited resources to build functional prototypes for the new development in Medical devices and other segment of industry. Yet companies continue to progress and successfully do digital and physical prototypes with cost effective resources while keeping the cost very low. Expensive prototype machines are out of reach of many SMEs but the development continue to happen in the medical devices meeting the desired needs.
