Microwave Materials Processing Laboratory
The main focused aims of developing new processing and manufacturing technologies are to reduce production or manufacturing costs, processing times, and to enhance manufactured product properties. The developed processing techniques should be widely acceptable for all types of materials including metal matrix composites, ceramics, alloys, and fiber reinforced plastics. Microwave materials processing is emerging as a novel processing technology which is applicable to a wide variety of materials system including processing of MMC, FRP, alloys, ceramics, metals, powder metallurgy, material joining, coatings, and claddings. In comparison to the conventional processes, microwave processing of materials offers better mechanical properties with reduced defects and economical advantages in terms of power and time savings.

The general objectives of the polymer composites activities are the development of high performance fibre reinforced composites for space and aerospace applications, the improvement or modification of resin systems to introduce further functions like wear resistance, electrical conductivity, low shrinkage, impact resistance, lower permeability, UV protection, transparency, higher surface protection, flame retardancy or anti-ice capability.
To achieve high level of surface finish is a difficult task especially in complex shaped components, 3-D components and components with freeform (or sculptured) surfaces. Knee joint is one of such components which has freeform surfaces. Surface finish is very expensive and time consuming operation. Moreover, surface finish of a knee joint plays a crucial role in its functionality and life expectancy. The range of variation of surface roughness value on the different faces is required to be minimum.
