Faculty Development programme on

Technology Humanization through Ergonomics

15th August - 22nd August, 2019
About Electronics & ICT Academy at IIITDM Jabalpur

Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India has instituted four Electronics and ICT Academies with one academy at IIITDM Jabalpur. Primary objective of the academy is to prepare manpower for two important missions - 'Digital India' and 'Make in India'. The Academy aims at the design and implementation of scalable training programmes in niche areas of electronics and ICT for the development of required knowledge base, skills and tools to unleash the talent of Indian population. In addition to this, the academy conducts training programmes and research promotion workshops in different emerging areas of technology and science for corporate sector and educational institutions. The Academy is envisioned to become a central hub of activities on training, consultancy work and entrepreneurship programmes.

About IIITDM Jabalpur

Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing Jabalpur (IIITDMJ), established by MHRD Govt. of India in collaboration with Govt. of Japan in 2005 with a focus on education and research in IT enabled Design and Manufacturing. The Institute offers undergraduate, post graduate and PhD programmes in Design, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and PhD in Natural Sciences. To build strong partnership with industry, Institute offers six months long internship to the UG/PG students as part of their curriculum. Under IIIT act, the Institute has been declared an Institute of National Importance in January 2015. The Institute campus is being developed on 250 acres of land next to Dumna Nature Park. The lush greenery campus provides an ideal setting for learning and creativity.

Who should attend this course?

Faculty members and research scholars from academic institutions, colleges and universities affiliated under Council of architecture, AICTE and UGC. Industry personnel working in the related discipline can also apply. Training programme of this course "Technology Humanization through Ergonomics" is interdisciplinary in nature. Participants from all disciplines Mechanical engineering, Industrial production engineering, Information technology, Civil engineering, Architecture and Design will be benefited from this course. This course will cover the three broad areas of ergonomics: Physical, Cognitive and Organizational with its application in transportation, medical equipment design, in informal sectors, information processing in control and display and in Agriculture. Experts from industries and academia will be taking lectures, where they will share different real time problems and case studies.

Participants will receive "Certificate of Participation" at the end of the programme.

About the course

Now-days we are encircled with technologies, white goods in our kitchen, drawing room, bedroom, while travelling in high end cars, at office and where not. Now just think for a moment, how many of them are easy, effortless and enjoyable to use. Is it all or the list may be small? Why is this so?

Many of these products, example a remote control of TV set or a microwave oven or a gas oven requires users to interact with them to carry out the task, which have not necessarily been designed keeping users in mind. They have been engineered to perform a set of functions, which might be effective from an engineering perspective but what about the users, who is going to use this system? Use of technologies need to have a good two-way traffic of information exchange between machine and the end user who is going to use this system. Hence, we need to humanize technology in the light of ergonomics perspective. Ergonomics is not new, its application in machines or equipment design makes the system easy, effortless and enjoyable to use. However, today's high technology has put man in a position where errors can have serious implications, for example in the work of an air traffic controller, a surgeon while performing laparoscopic surgery or an operator of a nuclear reactor where there is a high demand in decision making and information processing. Technically there may be little difference between the task of checking a watch to see what is the time and checking an altimeter in a flight desk control panel but the implication of an erroneous reading are vastly different.

Ergonomics as a subject, becomes highly challenging when demands of operational and control systems approached the boundaries of human performance. Widespread use of technology in the form of automation leads to man's information processing capabilities into challenge and thus increasing cognitive load. Thus humanization of technology by means of ergonomic is the need of the hour.
